I went through my WhatsApp and counted every conversation that started with someone asking about my services. The number was 15. Then I counted how many of those actually turned into paying work. Three.

That’s a 60% ghosting rate, and it’s not because I’m bad at what I do. It’s because I’m bad at how I talk to people.

The Setup

I’ve been freelancing for 7 months. I do social media ads — Facebook and Instagram campaigns — and I also build WordPress websites. I found my first two clients through paid ads, which means the system works. People see the ad, they message me, they’re interested. The pipeline is there. But somewhere between “hi, I saw your ad” and “let’s work together,” most people vanish.

The weird part? I’m not even expensive. I charge between 30,000 and 100,000 DZD depending on the project. That’s not the problem. The problem is somewhere in the conversation itself.

What Ghosting Actually Looks Like

It’s not dramatic. Nobody sends a rude message and disappears. It’s quieter than that.

Someone messages me on WhatsApp. They saw my ad. They want to know about social media management or a website. I reply. They ask about pricing. I send the offer. They read it — I can see the double blue ticks — and then nothing. No reply. No “that’s too much.” No “let me think about it.” Just silence.

Sometimes they ask more questions. “What’s included?” “How long does it take?” I answer every one. Then I ask what they need — what type of site, what they sell, what their goals are. They say “ecommerce.” I send the offer. They vanish.

One client actually told me he needed to see papers. He didn’t trust sending money to an unknown Facebook page. He wanted to meet in person. I get that — trust is earned, not assumed. But when I told him I work from home, he said “sorry” and that was it.

Another one asked for my portfolio. I sent the link — three live projects, all WordPress sites, all real. He said “nice” and never replied. Maybe three projects isn’t enough. Maybe it was something else entirely. I’ll never know.

What I Tried That Didn’t Work

When the ghosting started becoming a pattern, I tried fixing the obvious things.

I lowered my prices. No change. If anything, lower prices made people trust me less — like if I’m charging less, there must be something wrong with the work.

I built a proper portfolio website. Three clean projects, live links, professional design. Still, the same ghosting pattern. The portfolio looks good, but it doesn’t solve the problem of people not trusting a random freelancer on WhatsApp.

I tried premium themes on WordPress to make the sites look better. That helps with the final product, but it doesn’t help me get the client in the first place.

I asked around. Turns out I’m not alone. Most freelancers in Algeria feel the slowdown during summer. July and August are slow — people are on vacation, businesses are quiet, and nobody wants to commit to a new project. But that’s a seasonal thing. My problem is year-round.

The Real Problem — I’m Using AI to Talk to People

Here’s the part I didn’t want to admit.

I’ve been using AI to help me write replies to prospects. ChatGPT drafts my messages, suggests follow-ups, and even helps me explain what I do. It felt efficient. Professional. Like I was leveling up my communication.

But here’s what actually happened: I stopped listening.

When someone messages me asking about a website, I’m not thinking about what they need. I’m thinking about what the AI would say. I’m copy-pasting polished responses instead of having a real conversation. The messages sound good — they’re well-written, clear, structured — but they don’t feel human.

And people can tell.

When someone says “I need an ecommerce site,” my AI-trained brain jumps straight to the offer. Price. Timeline. What’s included. But I never asked the real questions. What do you sell? Why now? What’s your current situation? What’s actually stopping you from selling more?

I’m answering their questions instead of understanding their problems. There’s a difference between “yes, I can build an ecommerce site” and “tell me about your business — what’s working and what’s not.”

The first one sounds professional. The second one builds trust.

Why This Matters More in Algeria

In Algeria, trust isn’t optional — it’s everything. We don’t have Stripe, we don’t have PayPal, we don’t have the safety nets that make online transactions feel normal. Paying someone online here means sending money to a stranger and hoping they deliver. That’s a big ask.

So when I send a polished, AI-generated message that sounds like every other freelancer’s template, I’m not building trust. I’m blending in. I’m proving that I’m just another person behind a screen who might or might not deliver.

The clients who actually close are the ones where we had a real conversation. Where I asked questions and listened. Where I didn’t rush to the offer. Where they felt like they were talking to a person, not a brochure.

What I’m Changing

I’m not stopping ads — they work. I’m not switching away from WordPress — that’s the market here. I’m not raising or lowering my prices — that’s not the issue.

What I’m changing is how I talk to people.

I’m writing my own replies. No AI drafts. If I take 10 minutes to reply instead of 30 seconds, that’s fine. The delay itself shows I’m actually thinking about their situation.

I’m asking more questions before sending any offer. What do you sell? How long have you been doing this? What’s your biggest problem right now? What made you reach out today?

I’m slowing down. The urge to send the offer immediately is strong — it feels productive. But the real work happens before the offer, not after.

What I’d Tell Myself 7 Months Ago

Start conversations like a human, not like a sales machine. The offer is the easy part. Getting someone to trust you enough to hear it — that’s the actual work.

Tags: Freelancing Algeria, Client Acquisition, AI in Freelancing, WordPress Algeria, Social Media Marketing

Category: Freelancing

Suggested slug: losing-clients-algeria-freelancing-lessons

I’ve Lost 60% of My Leads in 7 Months — Here’s What I’m Doing Wrong 7 months of freelancing in Algeria, countless ghosted conversations, and one hard truth about how I’m communicating with clients.
